You may be seeking counselling or psychotherapy for reasons such as anxiety and depression, relationship issues, anger, loss, self-esteem, identity problems, feeling lost, or difficult events in your past or present.

You may have tried to numb painful feelings with distractions such as overwork, technology, dramatic relationships, people pleasing, achievement, hiding, medication, alcohol, drugs, sex…. the list of alternatives is endless. But by pushing away our unaddressed difficult feelings, they remain stuck or even intensify over time.

I have come to see that these difficult feelings aren’t individual problems in need of isolated treatment, but that they are clear messages from within ourselves of the need for change.

It can be tempting to try to “fix” difficult and painful feelings – to seek strategies or to medicate so that they can be managed, worked around, or overcome. And whilst we may find some relief for a time, the truth is that our feelings are our bodies’ own messages to ourselves, and only when we learn to listen to, accept and act upon those feelings - through self-acceptance, self-compassion, and self-awareness - do we find ourselves able to take new actions and decisions that are entirely right for ourselves.

When we do, we find our lives changing in ways that were previously unimaginable. We learn the power of taking action that meets our true needs and leads to satisfaction and contentment. We see that previous habits of numbing or avoidance have only served to keep us where we were, and we inevitably develop a determination to change them. We become comfortable in our own skin and experience the joy and freedom of living authentically.

It takes courage and honesty to look at ourselves in this way, and it can be difficult to know where to start. My therapeutic approach is to provide a confidential environment of trust, understanding, compassion and respect within which we work to break out of old patterns, and make permanent changes towards a more fulfilling way to live with both ourselves and others.

This is the work of permanent lasting change – when we empower ourselves with the right and possibility to create a different future for ourselves.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and my therapy practice is located at Silk House Therapy in Macclesfield, Cheshire.
